the effective altruism community on campus, whether you’re completely new to the ideas of effective altruism or interested in discussing them further as part of our community.
We run programming in the fall and spring semesters, which is open to students at any Harvard school. Fellowship applications open in January for Spring and will re-open in September for Fall cohorts.
How do we do good, better? Every semester, we select a group of students to join us for a seven-week fellowship. Through weekly readings, discussions, social events, writing, research, and more, we will explore the defining problems of our time, including topics in psychology, philosophy, economics, and technology. By the end of the semester, Fellows have access to in-depth coaching, career connections, and unique opportunities to help others as part of a happy and meaningful life.
Impact Research Initiative (IRI) helps talented and ambitious students from Harvard and MIT take the first steps toward a high-impact research career. Over the course of 8 weeks, participants work in small teams to explore a research question in one of our key focus areas: AI governance, technical AI safety, biosecurity, global health, or animal welfare. With guidance from experienced mentors, students develop their research skills and contribute to work that addresses pressing global challenges — with a $1,500 prize awarded to the best overall project at the end of the program.
HUEA also hosts open events, such as weekly dinners with different themes or topics, speaker events, weekend retreats, and travel to conferences across the US and Europe.
We host bi-weekly socials that are open to all affiliates (Harvard, MIT) at 31 Athens St, Cambridge.
These socials happen every Sunday @ 6 pm (with effective altruists from around 10 universities regularly attending).
